Sri Lanka marked a historic milestone in STEAM education as two student teams from Burhani Serendib School represented the nation for the first time at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) International Final 2025 in Singapore.

Held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the event featured over 3,300 young robotics enthusiasts from 100+ countries, showcasing innovative solutions across RoboMission, RoboSports, Future Innovators, and Future Engineers under the theme “The Future of Robots.”

Sri Lanka’s Teams

  • Project R.E.A.C.H. – Taher Hussain (15), Taher Iqbal Hussain (15), and Ammaar Mustafa (14) developed EchoLens, AI-powered smart glasses assisting individuals who are deaf, mute, or visually impaired. They placed 26th out of 58 teams.
  • SmartSteps – Burhanuddin Aliasger (13), Burhanuddin Shabbir (13), and Insiya Hamza (12) created WalkBot, a smart walking-stick attachment that detects obstacles for visually impaired users. They placed 30th out of 58 teams.

Guided by Teacher in Charge Murtaza Hamid and Coach Mustafa Hussain, the students trained intensively for nearly a year, overcoming coding and hardware challenges while demonstrating creativity and problem-solving.

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Singapore personally visited and congratulated the teams for their innovative and socially impactful projects.

Looking ahead, both teams are refining their projects for Phase Two, while Sri Lanka prepares for the WRO National Finals on the 28th of March 2026.
