Execution: The project was chaired by Int. Abbas Aliakber and supported by the Hayleys Company- Agri Division who also arranged for the attendace of 70 farmers.Funds were obtained through donations and small-scale finace projects.
The Interact club of Burhani Serendib school organised “EIEIO” -a novel initiative part of the interact week celebrations focusing on the upliftment of our nation’s producers and achieving food security, both of which are fundamental to achieving community and economic development.
EIEIO was organised in association with the Hayleys Company Agri Division. It was held at the Mahiyanganaya Guest House in Mahiyanganaya from 11:00pm to 3:00pm targetting the farming community of the town. The 70 farmers were invited to a workshop by environmentalist and promoter of sustainable farming Mr Thilak Kandegama on the topic of sustainable farming. The talk mainly focused on how old and new farming methods can be combined to reduce negative environmental impacts and maximise yield. The farmers were greatly intrigued by the concepts that were introduced to them and actively participated in the session by frequently posing questions. The session was also graced by the presence of the President of the All Island Farmer’s Association and some members of the local government all of whom expressed their appreciation of such a venture being undertaken by school children.
At the end of the workshop, two much needed Power Sprayers were gifted to the Gherkin Farming community by the Interact Club of BSS. Lunch was also provided to each of the farmers at the venue.
Through EIEIO our club succeeded in expanding our branches while remaining true to our Interact roots for the betterment of society as a whole.
